Vance "Van" Crawford was a carefree wealthy heir, a world expert in hobbies of all kinds. One day, while playing golf, he witnessed a UFO crash very close to where he was. Van did not hesitate to approach the ship and inside it found a dying techno-organic creature. While trying to help the being, the alien came into physical contact with Van. The creature spoke a few words in its unintelligible tongue, then its form liquefied into a dark fluid that washed into Van. Vance woke up in his bed a few hours later thinking that maybe it had just been a bad dream brought on by indigestion. However, Van discovered that he was able to "manifest" a strange suit, and that when he did, he gained extraordinary powers that he did not quite understand or master. The latter did not dissuade him from using them, moreover, Van became a superhero.
Van was a round guy, albeit tremendously agile for his weight and bulk. He was not a good fighter, and he was somewhat clumsy, but no one could beat him in will and courage. When he was in the form of Captain Saucer Man, Van was able to fly faster than sound, fire force bolts, deflect bullets, survive in the vacuum of space or the seafloor, and was also able to communicate telepathically. It is possible that the uniform-symbiote possessed more powers, but it is unknown.
