Ricky Davis was the son of a professor who worked at an atomic lab in Sterling City. He was there with his father and other professors when Professor Keith Spencer was demonstrating a cobalt containment procedure. When the procedure went awry, Professor Spencer shielded the attendees from the radiation with his own body, ensuring that he would be the only one exposed to the contamination. Spencer survived, but absorbed so much radiation that it was practically considered a slow, painful death sentence. Several days later, Ricky, feeling responsible, approached the professor in hopes that he could do something to help him. But unbeknownst to the young boy, the radiation had the opposite effect: instead of killing Spencer, he became stronger than ever. When he returned for another visit a few days later, Ricky overheard Spencer describing his new powers and vowing to use them to fight evil as Major Blast. Ricky swore he would not reveal Spencer's secret and offered to help him. Keith Spencer accepted his offer and Ricky became his eponymous youth companion.
At first, Ricky lacked any paranormal abilities. What he lacked in powers he made up for in courage and determination. Later, Professor Spencer was able to create a belt with which Ricky was able to duplicate Major Blast's abilities. Even later in time, Ricky's body developed its own paranormal abilities.
